New retaining wall provides protection and an extended patio

The failure of an existing retaining brick wall led to a Purkelly solution which made the site safe and extended the patio from 1 to a 4 metre useable area.

The failure of the brick wall in the rear garden of this North London property which divided the property from an adjacent car park at higher level meant that the site required immediate attention.
By recommending a solution involving a contiguous bored piled wall to the site engineer we not only made the area safe but also enabled a much larger patio to be constructed across the full width of the house.
The installation was designed to resist the horizontal pressure of retained earth as well as the surcharge load from the car park above.
The 300 mm piles were bored to a depth of 8 metres and a reinforced concrete capping beam was formed at the top. Once the piled wall had been installed, earth was safely excavated from the front and a reinforced concrete base slab was cast to provide the much extended patio area. Finally, a concrete facing was applied to the piled wall to cover the spaces between the piles and provide an acceptable appearance.
