Beam and base: economical and effective
Client: Building insurers through their consulting engineer
Brampton Grove, London
The environmental rewards were fewer vehicle movements, less spoil and materials.
Shrinkable clay was the culprit in this case of tree root subsidence which had affected a garage attached to the side of the house.
It was clear that the project lent itself to beam and base underpinning as it involved long straight walls. As the offending tree had removed there was clearly no danger that roots would establish themselves again between the bases and affect internal walls.
Having been given an outline scheme, we developed a final design which was approved by the consulting engineer.

The result was an economical and effective solution requiring minimum excavation and concreting. The environmental rewards were fewer vehicle movements, less spoil and materials.
