Piled raft solution wins on practicality and cost
Client: The architects occupying the property
Purkelly provided the design and built the piled raft solution for a timber framed residential and office development.

Ossian Road, Stroud Green
Our Clients were constructing timber framed offices and residential accommodation on a sloping site comprising a wide but shallow triangular area. There is a covered reservoir at the rear and a pavement with two large mature trees at the front.
As the trees could not be removed it was essential that the building would be protected against the effects of subsidence and heave.
We assessed that piled foundations were required. Traditional strip footings were ruled out as they would have needed to be deep and was impractical and too costly to carry out.

Purkelly were appointed to design and install the foundations which involved design approval and monitoring by local authority engineers. The installation is a reinforced concrete slab on 250mm auger piles.
The raft was built on a 250mm layer of ‘Cellcore’ heave protection and the piles sleeved for the top 3 metres to prevent future movement from possible ground heave.
