Purkelly take on additional work – and still complete on time
Client: Architects acting for the council

Purkelly dealt with 25% more work which came to light during a demanding contract for major superstructure repairs – and still completed within the original time.

Highgate Road, Camden

Urgent repairs within a very short time frame needed to be made to the superstructure of a council owned property comprising a shop with two flats above.

Purkelly were appointed to carry out the contract strictly within 12 weeks so that the shop could then reopen. Not only was the demanding contract completed in time, a further 25% of additional repairs discovered and agreed in the course of the works were finished in the 12 weeks.

The core task was to replace the load on an existing beam by installing a new box steel beam to support the two upper storeys. In addition a helibar system of steel bars were fitted and resin applied around the perimeter and high level repairs carried out on the main roof.

Lateral restraint was provided using mild steel pattress plates installed on all floors of the building.

Other interior and exterior work required in the contract included repairing arches and windows, T&G floors renewed in the shop, partial rewiring and plumbing, decoration inside and out and fitting out.

During the course of the main work rot was discovered in the flat roof above the front of the shop. This had to be entirely renewed and the brickwork re-pointed as an essential addition to the contract.
