Precision built retaining wall
Client: A large regional building contractor
Purkelly worked to tight deadlines to construct a retaining wall between a newbuild housing development on a sloping site and adjacent housing.

Sydney Road, Muswell Hill
The retaining wall was designed by the project engineer. The retaining wall
between a new housing development and existing houses on a higher level
needed to be constructed to precise measurements.
Speed was also of the essence which meant that we had to work very accurately within the tight deadlines agreed in the contract.
The design involved the installation of 8m long steel universal columns in 300mm diameter auger bored holes in very specific locations along the length of the wall as set out by the site engineer. The steel columns were then concreted in the holes to within 2.5 metres from the existing ground level.
The earth mound in front of the columns was then excavated in sections so as not to undermine the adjacent houses and pre-cast concrete planks were installed between the posts to retain the earth and houses on the higher level. The design and install proved a quick and efficient solution to the problem of making the site safe for the future.
