Strengthening foundations for an additional floor
Client: The architect acting for the owners
Existing foundations were inadequate to support the upward extension of a substantial 200 sq metre house involving a completely new storey.

Parkside, Wimbledon
The engineer appointed by the architect recommended Purkelly to design and construct an underpinning scheme for this home on Wimbledon Common.
We assessed the options and recommended piled underpinning as the most economical and appropriate solution.
The design comprised sixty six 220mm diameter steel cased driven piles. The walls were temporarily supported using adjustable steel stools allowing the reinforced concrete raft slab to be constructed continuously beneath the external and internal load bearing walls. Installation was carried out in two stages to maintain the stability of the property.

During installation a specialist company carried out pile load tests to prove the capacity of Purkelly designed piling.
